Information about the forum's features

Hi everyone,

Here are some useful pieces of information about the features and specifics of this forum.

For any comments, questions, or remarks, I invite you to do so in the About the Forum forum.

Availability of Certain Editor Options

To somewhat reduce the number of buttons for new members (and to limit certain abuses), some editor options are not immediately available.

Here are the prerequisites:

  • Horizontal line: from 20 posts
  • Links: from 30 posts*
  • Information panels: from 50 posts
  • Spoiler: from 100 posts (not available in the first 5 question forums)
  • Videos: from 500 posts
  • Editing posts: for 60 minutes in most cases

*internal links (Excel-Pratique and Sheets-Pratique) as well as Google "docs.google.com" links are allowed from the first post

Availability of Certain Profile Options

The profile allows publishing different types of links (a minimum number of posted posts is however required to limit certain abuses).

Here are the prerequisites for these links:

  • Facebook / X (Twitter) / LinkedIn: from 25 posts
  • Youtube: from 50 posts
  • Personal website / blog: from 100 posts

Reply Button

A Reply button is available at the bottom of the thread.

But in some cases, a Reply button at the top of the thread is still quite handy... That's why a Reply button is also available at the top of the thread but hidden:

reply 0

To display and use the Reply button at the top of the thread, simply hover over its location:

reply 1

Do not try to test this on this thread, it will not work (because the thread is locked).

Connected Users

Members are considered "online" if they have been active on the forum in the last 10 minutes.

Online members have an icon to the left of their username in their profile:

Followed Threads and Favorite Messages

Followed Threads

This feature allows you to follow one or more threads and receive an email notification in case of a new message posted in a followed thread.

To follow or unfollow a thread, click on the "(Un)follow this Thread" link at the top of the concerned thread.

You can then find the list of followed threads by clicking on the "Followed Threads" link in the menu.

By default, notifications are enabled and new threads you open are added to your list of followed threads (however, it is possible to change this in your account preferences).

Favorite Messages

This feature allows you to mark messages to find them more easily later.

To mark a post as a favorite or to remove it from favorites, click on the star icon of the concerned post.

You can then find the marked messages in "Menu" > "My Favorites".

Votes

The purpose of votes is to highlight the most useful posts you encounter. These posts will then be more prominently featured in searches to help find the most useful posts for each problem more easily.

Additionally, when a post is marked as a solution , it automatically gains +1 to its count.

When necessary, it's also possible to give a negative vote to posts that do not deserve to be highlighted.

Here's an example of a vote counter that has received 4 positive votes (or 5 positive votes + 1 negative, etc.):

vote 1

If you voted positively (+1), the counter remains displayed in green:

vote 2

If you voted negatively (-1), the counter remains displayed in red:

vote 3

Notes:

  • The names of the voters are not displayed in the post but can be obtained by consulting the profile page of the concerned member
  • To avoid negative reactions following moderation actions, it is not possible to vote -1 on the posts of moderators and the administrator

Attachments

Files

The default limit is 1.5 MB maximum per file, including for PMs.

Members who support the forum (Premium) have a slightly higher limit, that is 3 MB maximum per file, including for PMs.

Where possible, create a minimalist file containing just enough information to solve your problem (to simplify requests and avoid unnecessarily overloading the server).

Remember to remove all personal and/or confidential data from the file BEFORE attaching it (this utility can help you anonymize your files).

Images

There is (almost) no size limit for attached images as they are automatically resized and/or compressed if necessary.

If you need to crop a screenshot, you can crop it online using this utility and if you need to blur part of a capture, another utility can help you blur part of the image.

Note that to avoid losing attachments over time, hosting files on external sites is not allowed.

Thread Links

In the list of threads of a forum, each thread has 2 links:

links

If the thread is displayed as "read":

  1. The left link will lead to the first post of the thread
  2. The right link will lead to the last post of the thread

If the thread is displayed as "unread":

  1. The left link will also lead to the first post of the thread
  2. The right link will lead to the first unread post of the thread

Private Messaging

About private messaging:

  • The last 30 contacted members are displayed as shortcuts in the left column (click on the arrow to display the conversation with a member)
  • The messages on the left are those of the selected member
  • The messages on the right (in blue) are yours
  • A grey or blue icon is displayed below your messages (blue = message seen by the member)
  • In case of an error, you can click on the trash icon to delete the message (an "message deleted" information will be displayed instead)
  • A maximum of 100 messages are displayed (older messages will no longer be accessible)
  • Messages are deleted after one year

Link to a Specific Post

A link that leads to a specific post is available here:

Paragraphs

In the editor...

Every time you press Enter...

A new paragraph is created...

As you can see...

If you want to create a paragraph of several lines...
It's possible...
By pressing...
Shift + Enter (or Ctrl + Enter).

Ignoring Certain Posts for Notifications

You can now choose to ignore some of your posts to avoid "My Contributions" notifications and also hide them in the "My Contributions" or "My Posts (+ Followed Threads)" pages.

For example, you participated at the beginning of a thread, then other members took over and you no longer wish to follow this thread. In this case, click on the button of your post or posts in the thread you wish to ignore:

ignore

Some notes:

  • You cannot do this if you are the author of the thread
  • You must do it for each of your posts in the thread to be ignored, otherwise, you will be notified
  • As it is unnecessary for new members and to avoid overloading with features at the beginning, this button is displayed after you have posted 30 messages on the forum
